Royal Caribbean International plans to launch its newest cruise ship next year called “Icon of the Seas.”
This ship has many exciting things planned for guests, including an infinity pool.
The giant swimming pool on a cruise ship that is currently sailing is on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. It is over 18,000 square feet, making it one of the biggest pools in the world. The pool is in the middle of the ship and surrounded by an expansive sun deck. There are also two whirlpools, two slides, and two FlowRiders for guests to enjoy.
Icon of the Seas
Icon of the Seas is scheduled to launch in early 2024 and will become the largest cruise ship ever built by Royal Caribbean International (RCI).
The ship will have over 1,800 guest staterooms and more than 16 decks. It also boasts several accommodations, including private balconies and mini-suites.
One of the most exciting aspects about this cruise ship is that it will include infinite balcony rooms. This means there are no walls between you and your view outside your cabin window. Guests can walk around their room as if they were walking around Central Park or any other outdoor space without worrying about bumping into someone else.
Another unique feature of this ship is that each deck offers something completely different. For example, Deck 6 offers stunning sea views, while Deck 9 focuses on entertainment options like comedy shows and concerts. There are even two helicopter pads on the top of the ship so guests can fly above the ocean for an aerial tour.
What Is A Gross Ton?
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about what a gross tonnage is. A gross tonnage is how much weight a vessel weighs when fully loaded.
For example, Queen Mary 2 is currently the world’s largest passenger cruise ship but only weighs approximately 70,000 gross tons.
In contrast, the new Royal Princess cruise ship, which debuted earlier this month, weighs almost 125,000 gross tons. That’s why it could sail across the Atlantic Ocean twice a day!
However, not all ships are created equal. If you take the same amount of passengers on board three different vessels, those vessels might weigh very differently depending on how many people they carry.
That’s where the term “gross tonnage” comes into play because it accounts for the total number of passengers and crew members onboard and the type of food and supplies a particular ship carries.
So now that we know what a gross tonnage is, let’s see which cruise ship has the giant swimming pool.
Which Cruise Ship Has The Biggest Swimming Pool?
The answer to this question is Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas. She measures in at just under 200,000 gross tons.
At her total capacity, the Allure of the Seas has a whopping 798 staterooms and a massive swimming pool that spans nearly the entire ship.
Four pools are on board the Allure of the Seas — one main pool stretching out near the front of the ship and three smaller pools toward the back. Each pool contains waterfalls, slides, fountains, and water jets.
Since the Allure of the Seas is such a large ship, there isn’t enough room for everyone to swim laps simultaneously. So instead, the ship rotates through certain areas throughout the week to accommodate guests who want to swim laps.
Guests can go to the pool area during lunchtime, afternoon tea, happy hour, or dinner. In addition, some of the ship’s bars and lounges contain jacuzzis so guests can relax and unwind before going to the pool area.
The Allure of the Seas is still cruising the waters today, and although she won’t be quite as big once she returns to port, she certainly lives up to her name. She recently set a record for a single ship’s most extended cruise ever.
The previous record holder was Costa Luminosa, another RCI cruise ship sailing since 2015. However, Costa Luminosa returned to port last November due to maintenance issues and was subsequently retired. Now, the title belongs to the Allure of the Seas!
