The number of passengers a cruise ship can hold varies based on the ship’s size and design. On average, a cruise ship can have anywhere from a few hundred to over 6,000 passengers.
However, the exact capacity can vary greatly depending on the type of ship and its specifications, as some boats can hold fewer passengers but offer more luxury amenities. In contrast, others are designed to maximize passenger capacity. The largest cruise ships can hold up to over 8,000 passengers.
How Many People Can a Cruise Ship Hold?
Several factors determine how many people can fit inside a cruise ship. For starters, each vessel must adhere to specific regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
These include a maximum overall length of 180 meters (591 feet), a minimum width of 30 meters (98 feet), and a minimum breadth of 17 meters (56 feet). In addition, all cruise ships must carry enough lifeboats and rafts to accommodate 1,000 people.
Finally, most modern cruise ships also feature “life-enhancing systems,” like air conditioning, elevators, and swimming pools.
These rules help ensure that every person onboard can enjoy themselves during the voyage without feeling crowded. But since some of these requirements can vary depending on the type of ship you book, here are the current limits for different types of cruise ships according to IMO guidelines:
Cruise Ships With Passenger Capacity Under 1044 Passengers – This category includes small cruise and expedition ships. As such, the total limit for this group is 896 passengers.
Cruise Ships With Passenger Capacity Between 1045 To 1849 Passengers – These larger cruise ships are often called “large passenger ships” because they generally seat between 950 and 2,500 passengers. There are currently three ships in this category: Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas. All three exceed the IMO limit, but Symphony of the Seas holds the record with a whopping 5,400 passengers.
Cruise Ships With Passenger Capacity Over 1850 Passengers – Most large cruise ships fall under this category, including Carnival’s massive cruise ships like Carnival Horizon, Carnival Splendor, and Carnival Victory. However, there are exceptions. Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess and Star Princess are slightly smaller than most mega-ships, carrying just over 4,200 passengers.
The larger your cruise ship is, the more space you’ll have available per passenger. That means that even on a relatively small cruise ship like the Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas, you should still expect about 150 square meters (1,632 square feet) of indoor space per passenger. However, on a giant ship like Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, you’ll get closer to 200 square meters (2,191 square feet) per passenger.
How Big Are Cruise Ships Today?
So far, the world’s largest cruise ship is the Oasis of the Seas, which measures 1,187 meters (3,861 feet) in length and weighs 199,282 tons. At 65 decks high, the Oasis of the Seas features 16 passenger decks, 12 dining rooms, seven swimming pools, five bars, four spas, a casino, and even a mini golf course. It’s enormous, so it was voted the best cruise line in the world in 2016.
However, it wasn’t always this way. During the mid-20th century, cruising wasn’t a popular form of travel. Instead, people were encouraged to spend their vacations sailing from port to port along the shores of Europe and North America. The 1980s brought us another significant development – the introduction of newer technologies like diesel engines, which helped provide faster speeds and increased fuel efficiency. Soon after came the concept of “all-inclusive,” where passengers pay a single fee to cover everything from meals to entertainment. Today, cruise lines offer hundreds of destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Australia, Asia, Hawaii, South America, and the Caribbean.
